Research Officer in Analytic Software Development

 

Salary from £34,736 to £42,019 pa inclusive of London Allowance

 

This is a full-time fixed-term appointment until 31 August 2019

 

This full-time position is a shared appointment between the Departments of Methodology and International Relations. It will consist of a combination of software development led by Professor Kenneth Benoit (Methodology) aimed at supporting and extending the quanteda R package and associated software. A core part of this will involve developing a Shiny application in R and JavaScript based on the quanteda R package, as well as contributing to the development of the quanteda package ecosystem (http://github.com/quanteda) more generally. The other half of the position involves working with Professor Peter Trubowitz (International Relations) and will involve time-series analysis of the use of military force by great powers.  A core part of this project will involve managing and analysing data and contributing to the writing of conference papers and journal articles.

 

The successful candidate will have a completed PhD, or be working towards completion of a PhD, ideally in a technical field in the Social Sciences, working with programming and text analysis. They will have extensive computing and applied data science skills, including programming experience in R and Shiny, some knowledge of JavaScript and JS frameworks, and a working knowledge of database managers (especially SQL-based RDMSes). They will also have a background and training in international conflict or comparative foreign policy and extensive experience working with large cross-national data sets on international conflict and foreign policy. Candidates must also have excellent technical writing skills and oral communication skills and the ability to manage their own workload and work to tight timescales.
