Research Assistant, Transition Pathway Initiative

 

Salary from £31,029 to £35,635 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £38,283 pa inclusive of London allowance 

 

This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months. Due to project deliverables, applicants must be able to take up the post no later than the week of 22 November 2021.           

 

The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment (GRI) is recruiting a fixed term full-time Research Assistant (RA) to work on a project for the next 12 months. The RA will work with the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) research team. The GRI is the academic partner to the TPI. TPI is an investor-led initiative to ensure the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters take necessary action on climate change. To this end TPI evaluates and tracks the quality of companies’ management of their greenhouse gas emissions and of risks and opportunities related to the low-carbon transition as well as how companies’ future carbon performance would compare to the international targets and national pledges made as part of the Paris Agreement.

The postholder will work on the Assessing Sovereign Climate-related Opportunities and Risks (ASCOR) project. The project goal is to develop an assessment framework that enables the current and future climate change governance and performance of sovereigns to be fairly and appropriately measured, monitored and compared. This assessment framework will then be used to produce an annual public assessment of the climate change governance and climate change performance of sovereigns. Under the supervision of the TPI Deputy Research and Project Lead and with a support of the TPI team, the postholder will be primarily responsible for developing an assessment framework and methodology that can be used to assess how well governments are responding to climate change, adapting the framework through consultations and applying it to an agreed universe of countries. The post holder will also contribute to the design of a subpage in the TPI online tool where data can be displayed, and will draft a report presenting the outcomes of the framework.

Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in environmental economics/finance, environmental/energy policy, corporate sustainability, economics, finance, management, or a related field. They should have strong analytical skills with the ability to produce high-quality research and analysis in a timely manner, including the ability to analyse and research complex ideas and apply appropriate methods with strong quantitative skills including proficiency with spreadsheets and spreadsheet-based models. Candidates will also have a good understanding of issues in sustainable finance and investment, with experience of drafting and editing reports, and excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas and technical issues to a range of different non-technical audiences, including decision-makers. Due to the data focused nature of the role excellent and proficient IT skills, including advanced MS Excel skills as well as data management skills, are essential. Successful applicants should demonstrate the ability to work in a highly collaborative and fast paced environment, with the ability to both work independently and as part of a team within the Grantham Research Institute and across relevant research partners.
