Research Officer, Digital Makings of the City of Refuge

 

Salary: £34,736 pa inclusive (pro rata if part-time)

 

This is a fixed term full-time position for 12 months commencing on 1 June 2018. Two part-time (0.5FTE) positions for 12 months will also be considered.

 

LSE’s Department of Media and Communications, established in 2003, comprises internationally acclaimed faculty who conduct critical, empirical and engaged research into the central role of media and communications within contemporary society.

 

We are currently seeking a Research Officer to join us by working on the project Resilient communities, resilient cities? Digital makings of the city of refuge. The project is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Global Affairs (IGA), LSE. The project investigates the role of digital communication in supporting resilient urban communities, especially in response to change resulting from refugee and migrant arrivals. The Research Officer will undertake empirical research at two or more of the cities on study: Athens, Berlin, London – along with the Principle Investigator (Dr Myria Georgiou) and the Co-Principle Investigator (Dr Suzanne Hall) and participate in the organisation, conduct and analysis of fieldwork and participatory events in two or more of the cities on study.

 

You will have a completed PhD, or be working towards completion of a PhD, in a Social Sciences discipline, by the post start date, or have other research experience that demonstrates the capability to produce independent original research. You must have experience in conducting qualitative research and experience employing qualitative research with media users and/or migrants would be an advantage.  Working in a transdisciplinary research project employing quantitative methods, especially surveys, is desirable. You must have the ability to analyse and research complex ideas, concepts or theories, and to apply appropriate research methodologies.

 

You will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to manage your own workload and work to tight timescales. You must be able to demonstrate research interests in migration and/or the city, urban studies and/or digital cultures.  Previous experience working with migration and media users in Europe would be an advantage. A good level of spoken Arabic is essential and a good level of spoken German and/or Greek would be desirable.
