TWO 3-year ESRC Innovation Fellowships

Fixed term appointments for 3 years

Salary from £34,736 to £42,019 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £45,212 pa inclusive in exceptional circumstances

The Centre for Economic Performance at London School of Economics & Political Science seeks to appoint two 3 year innovation fellowships to carry out research aligned to the Government’s Industrial Strategy and based on a business / industry need.

Whilst the fellows will be encouraged to develop their own research agenda around the industrial strategy, we are looking for candidates with interest and research experience in the following two areas: the Digital Economy, Productivity and the Labour Market; and/or Skills, Organisational Practices and Productivity

The first fellowship would carry out research around productivity and labour market implications of the digital economy, including the role of technology in helping firms optimise supply chains and the impacts of digitisation on the efficiency of job search, job security and wages. This work programme would also include a comparative study of international policies to support digital growth and their impact.

The second fellowship would investigate the relationships between different types of skills, organisational practices and firm performance; examine how business support policies or training programmes can affect firm outcomes; and consider how workers can achieve career progression and grow their productivity given the increase of self-employment and new working arrangements in the “gig economy”.

Both fellows would be required to build links with business/policy partners in the course of their research and to develop a programme of outreach and dissemination for their research and policy recommendations to achieve maximum impact.

Candidates will either have been awarded a PhD in Economics or related discipline in the past four years or be near to submitting; or must hold a Masters with Distinction in Economics or related discipline alongside equivalent professional work / policy and publication experience related to the areas of the fellowships. NOTE: applicants who have held a PHD for longer due to extenuating circumstances, such as interruption to their academic career for maternity leave or illness, will still be considered.

All candidates will have authored writings in applied economics of a standard publishable in academic journals; outstanding econometric skills and experience of working with large survey and administrative data related to the fields under investigation. Experience of engaging with policy questions and with non-academic stakeholders such as business, policy makers, professional organisations is required.

For more information about the post, please see the how to applyjob descriptionperson specification and the background information document outlining further details about the Centre and the two fellowships.
