This is a fixed term appointment for 20 months, beginning March 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter
LSE’s Department of Media and Communications is currently seeking a research officer to join us by working on the EU Horizon 2020 project VirtEU: Values and Ethics in Innovation for Responsible Technology in Europe, alongside Dr Alison Powell.
The project has been running for one year and the candidate will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research at primarily London-based sites, including small businesses and start-ups and producing research papers and reports based on this work, as well as contributions to the work of other parts of the VirtEU project. The candidate will work with the London Co-Investigator, Dr Alison Powell and LSE PhD researchers, and collaborate extensively with ethnographers, design researchers, legal scholars and computational social scientists at the other project sites. Find out more about VirtEU here: https://virteuproject.eu.
Candidates must have completed a PhD, be working towards completion of a PhD in social sciences or science and technology studies, or have other research experience that demonstrates the capability to produce independent original research. The candidate must be experienced in conducting ethnographies of technical cultures, and extremely comfortable working in an interdisciplinary research project employing quantitative, qualitative, legal and design methods. The candidate will have the ability to analyse and research complex ideas, concepts or theories, and to develop and apply appropriate methods including ethnography and digital ethnography as appropriate. The candidate will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to manage their workload and work to tight timescales. A strong interest in science and technology studies (STS), philosophy of technology or technical cultures would be an advantage, as would previous experience working with Internet of Things related development communities across Europe.
We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.
