London School of Economics & Political Science

Dean, School of Public Policy

LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is one of the world’s leading social science institutions. LSE’s commitment to enhancing policy-making has been at the heart of its mission since its founding in 1895. LSE was created ‘to understand the causes of things’ and for ‘the betterment of society’ and those timeless aspirations remain LSE’s mission statement to this day.

LSE is now preparing to make its next bold and ambitious step in the furtherance of that mission. Through the academic years of 2015-16 and 2016-17, LSE’s academic community has developed a series of proposals, which have now been fully approved, to establish a new School of Public Policy at LSE.

The School of Public Policy will train future generations of policy-makers in the governmental, non-profit and corporate sectors. The LSE is resolute in their determination that the reach of education must be truly global. Working in partnership with LSE departments and external partners, the School of Public Policy will achieve its purpose through its core activities of education, working with those in a position to make use of social science research, and to open new public dialogue and lead the global debate.

As a result, the LSE is now seeking to appoint a Professor or Professor in Practice, who will serve as the inaugural Dean of the School of Public Policy for an initial term of five years (renewable by agreement).

The School seeks an aspirational, inspiring and innovative leader. This is a rare opportunity to play a founding role in a flagship development in one of the world’s great social science institutions, with the chance to set a founding mission, form the networks for its success and put in place an institutional ethos and culture that will allow it to compete as one of the finest institutions of its type in the world.

The successful candidate will share the vision and passion for the future of public policy, and will be motivated by what LSE can achieve. They will be a dynamic leader who can enthuse others with this vision. The successful candidate will demonstrate the intellectual distinction to lead a graduate policy school at one of the world’s most prestigious university institutions. They will motivate, both individually and collectively, LSE’s academic faculty and will become the public face of campaigns to raise funds for its work, including the naming of the School of Public Policy. They will revel in the enthusiasm and dynamism of its outstanding students and work to enrich their experience and the bonds of its alumni network. They will build institutional partnerships, develop new dimensions to LSE’s already impressive relationships with policy-making, and possess the necessary commercial skill and entrepreneurial drive to be accountable for an expanding enterprise.

The School of Public Policy will launch in September 2018 and, from its full opening in 2019, will be located in the newly built Centre Building, LSE’s largest ever capital investment project.
