Research Officer (Conflict Research Programme)

Salary is competitive and not less than £35,999 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a full time, fixed term appointment to March 2021 in the first instance

The Department of International Development promotes interdisciplinary postgraduate teaching and research on processes of political, economic, and social development and change. The core concern of the Department’s Conflict and Civil Society Research Unit is to better understand the ways in which ordinary people seek to shape the decisions that affect their lives, with a particular focus on those experiencing conflict, prolonged violence, or war. The Unit is looking to recruit an energetic, enthusiastic and skilled Research Officer  for its flagship DFID-funded Conflict Research Programme (CRP). The CRP is designed to address the drivers and dynamics of violent conflict in the Middle East and Africa and to inform the measures being used to tackle armed conflict and its impacts.

The successful candidate will undertake research management and coordination of the programme under the supervision of the CRP Consortium Executive Director and CRP Co-Director for Research, working closely with the CRP Research Directorate, CRP Country Teams and the CRP Programme Manager, and will establish a personal research agenda in line with the overall objectives of the CRP. You will be required to work independently and be proactive. You will need to develop strong relationships with the funding and partner organisations; navigate research governance issues; monitor progress against the CRP work plan at both programme and country-programme levels; lead on gender mainstreaming across CRP structures and messaging, working closely with the CRP Gender Task Team and the CRP Uptake and Social Media Officer.

You will have a completed PhD or be close to completion, or have outstanding research experience in Development Studies, Politics, International Relations, Anthropology or a related discipline. You will have demonstrable ability to produce independent original research to world class journal standard; excellent command of the English language both orally and in writing; excellent time management skills and the ability to meet donor deadlines and financial milestones; and demonstrable ability to work independently under limited supervision and to prioritise work in response to deadlines.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.
