Amartya Sen Chair in Inequality Studies/Director, International Inequalities Institute

Salaries will be on the Professorial salary scale and will be commensurate with experience, taking into account pay equity.

The salary scale starts at £87,919 per annum (pay award pending) and can be found on the LSE website

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding scholar to a new endowed Chair, named after Amartya Sen, to be Director of the LSE’s International Inequalities Institute (III). We expect the Amartya Sen Chair in Inequality Studies to become one of the most distinguished in the world. It will allow its incumbent to champion new developments in inequality studies with global relevance, and to influence debates and interventions in this crucial area.

A driven, dynamic and compelling leader with experience operating at a global scale, the Director will apply their intellectual vision and expertise in shaping the III and its future. As Director, the post-holder will lead its research programme, which has significant core funding for the foreseeable future, and conduct outstanding global inequalities related research.  The post-holder will also have oversight of the III high profile teaching programmes, including the MSc Inequalities and Social Science and the III doctoral programme and will contribute to the flagship Atlantic Fellows Programme in Social and Economic Equity.

In accordance with the mission of the III, we particularly wish to recruit scholars whose work has global relevance, and who can build on the III’s concern to develop interdisciplinary research.  This post is open to a scholar from any social science discipline, with a commitment to research recognising the multidimensional and intersectional aspects of inequalities, Although the post will be full time within the International Inequalities Institute, it is expected that the appointee will, at a minimum, be affiliated to one of LSE’s Departments and possibly be formally appointed into one of LSE’s Departments (but full-time seconded to the III) and thereby be affiliated to one of LSE’s Departments.

Candidates will have an outstanding international reputation in the field of global inequalities; a proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced by existing publications of the highest quality; a track record of publishing on a continuous basis in top journals or with leading book publishers, together with a clear, well developed and viable strategy for future outstanding research that will result in further world-leading publications. Leadership and managerial experience, possibly as head of an academic unit, including overseeing financial resources/budgets and management of a large team is also essential, as is a significant track record of excellence in teaching. The ideal candidate will also offer a strong and inspiring vision for the Institute’s future as it seeks to escalate its impact on the global stage, providing wisdom, compassion, boldness and conviction to address the profound ethical questions raised by inequalities of all kinds.

We particularly welcome applications from women, ethnic minorities and people from the global south.
