Research Assistant, Democratic Dashboard

 

Salary from £28,241 to £32,689 pa (0.5 FTE) with potential to progress to £35,170 pa pro rata inclusive

 

 This is a fixed term appointment to 31 July 2019 and is part time for 17.5h hours per week (0.5FTE)

 

The Democratic Audit (DA) is an independent research organisation which audits democracy and human rights in the UK. It has operated at LSE since 2013. The LSE team is led by Professor Patrick Dunleavy, Dr Jonathan Hopkin and Professor Tony Travers. DA now has a well-established and authoritative reputation for charting and assisting the evolution of UK democratic practices across a wide canvass – see our blog at http://www.democraticaudit.com/  and @democraticaudit.  

 

We are looking for a Research Assistant to help continue and develop a key second part of DA’s operations, the Democratic Dashboard website (see http://democraticdashboard.com/). This site hosts digitally available and real time election information to assist voters connect to the democratic and electoral processes. The postholder will be responsible for managing and updating the DD website for elections in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and for any early general election. They will also work to extend the Dashboard to cover civic politics across the UK and to attract continuous usage (and not just at election times).

 

Candidates should have strong web skills, a Masters or PhD background in political science or a related discipline.  You will need to be comfortable working with datasets and good at working under deadlines. You’ll need to be a strong communicator, both verbally and in writing, and be used to social media tools. You will need to have a good overview of current issues and debates within democratic politics, both within the UK and overseas. A strong knowledge of how UK civic and sub-national politics works and a commitment to using research to help voters engage more with democratic politics will be essential.
