 LSE Gender Institute

Assistant Professor in Gender and Security

Salary is competitive with Departments at our peer institutions worldwide and not less than £53,004 pa inclusive

The Gender Institute was established in 1993 to address the major intellectual challenges posed by contemporary changes in gender relations. This remains a central aim of the Institute today, which is the largest research and teaching unit of its kind in Europe. The Gender Institute is interested in analysing and intervening in the gendered character of social processes, and believes that an integrated interdisciplinary and global approach is needed to do so. In our research and teaching we aim to combine theory and practice with an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective.

In order to extend our existing range of expertise we are looking to recruit a candidate at the level of Assistant Professor in Gender & Security to teach on and convene our MSc programme in Women, Peace and Security as well as contribute to our core course in gender theory or gender research. Candidates should have expertise and research interests in the inter-related fields of gender and security and a focus on one or more of the following: theorising policy and practice relating to the women, peace and security agenda; gender and peace making and peace building, conflict resolution and securitisation; human rights and humanitarian law, transitional justice; political economy approaches to violence; sexuality, embodiment and war; critical military studies; the humanitarian and aid industry or other related fields.

You will carry out teaching and research, significantly contributing to the Department’s Masters and PhD degree programmes and to the Department’s activities more broadly.  You should have an emerging publication record of the highest international standards in terms of originality, rigour and significance.  As well as teaching experience at postgraduate level in the above areas you should have a completed PhD in the social sciences, humanities or related disciplines.  You will contribute actively to the life of the Gender Institute, enjoy working as part of a team, and possess the ability to adapt to its varying demands.

The other criteria that will be used when shortlisting for this post can be found on the person specification, which is attached to this vacancy on the LSE’s online recruitment system.

In addition to a competitive salary the benefits that come with this job include an occupational pension scheme, a research incentive scheme with personal reward options, generous research leave (sabbatical) entitlement, a collegial faculty environment and excellent support, training and development opportunities.
