Geographical Research Economist

Urban and Spatial Programme, Centre for Economic Performance

 

Salary: £35,999 - £43,360 per annum inclusive pa inclusive of London allowance

 

This is a fixed term appointment  for 18 months

 

 

This Centre seeks a Geographical Research Economist with geographic data skills, to work on existing and emerging projects related to applied urban economics, spatial economics and housing. These topics will include, amongst others: land use, structure of cities; urbanization and development; housing and planning; amenities; ‘left behind’ places and lifetime migration. The role will involve extraction, creation, processing and analysis of geographical data sources, so requires experience in geographical information systems and other types of geographic data science.

 

You will assist the centre and programme director with Centre projects, and for some of them will take responsibility for the major part of research design, analysis and writing up. You will be encouraged and provided with sufficient time to develop a wider research agenda of your own, within the context of the overall work programme of the Centre.

 

You will have a first or upper second class undergraduate degree in Economics or other quantitative science discipline; a Masters in Economics or other quantitative science discipline.  It is desirable that you have a completed PhD in Economics, quantitative Economic Geography or other quantitative science discipline (or be within one year of completing this).

 

You must have experience of handling and quantitative analysis of large survey, census or administrative datasets, as well as the ability to interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data including spatial patterns of economic activity, income and wellbeing, and to think through economic problems analytically. You will also have a sound understanding of econometrics and statistics particularly in relation to urban/spatial economics, urbanisation and local economic development and be experienced in STATA and other econometrics software. You should have experience in using Geographical Information Systems for research purposes. Geographic data science skills including use of Python for processing data within GIS and for extracting information from web-based sources are an advantage.

 

You must have a commitment to your own personal research agenda and development of research projects within the overall objectives of the research centre, and have the ability to author/co-author papers of refereed journal article quality.
