IGC Country Economist – Bangladesh

Contract Fee: from £26,400 net of taxes depending on experience and subject to local market conditions

This is a fixed term contract until July 2023, with possible extension based on funding and performance review.

The International Growth Centre (IGC) aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research. The IGC directs a global network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams in Africa and South Asia working closely with partner governments to generate high quality research and policy advice on key growth challenges.

The IGC is currently seeking a Country Economist to be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

IGC Country Economists are the in-country representatives of the IGC, reporting to the Country Manager/Director. They manage and expand our in-country research portfolio, and also play a key role in influencing policy and maximising impact from our research. Our core thematic areas for research in Bangladesh focus on the determinants of economic growth including: (a) the mobilization and management of resources for growth; (b) inclusive and resilient jobs; (c) green growth; (d) investment promotion, trade and firm development; and, (e) productive and sustainable cities.

IGC Country Economists are the bridge between senior policymakers and researchers, engage in policy influencing activities, and lead project management. They also undertake economic analysis, co-author policy research papers, and write policy briefs, often in conjunction with senior researchers.  This requires a highly pro-active and organised approach, utilisation of economic research skills and policy knowledge, experience in engaging with policy stakeholders, and a passion and skill for informing policy.

Applicants should have:

·         Demonstrated understanding of policy-relevant economic research and expertise with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.

·         Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills, in particular evidence of explaining technical information to non-specialist audiences.

·         Demonstrated ability to plan and organise own workload in order to consistently meet deadlines, and to carry out tasks according to a priority assessment.

·         An MPA/MPP/MSc/MA degree in development economics, economics, public policy/administration, or a related discipline, with an evident command of at least one sub-discipline relevant to the IGC themes.

This role is an exciting opportunity to build a portfolio of research projects, working alongside the IGC’s pool of leading academics. Knowledge and experience in the Bangladesh policy sector would be a significant advantage.

As the successful applicant will be based in Bangladesh, local statutory regulations will apply and therefore applicants will need to demonstrate Bangladeshi nationality.
