 IGC Country Economist – Zambia

Salary from £28,400 net of taxes, depending on experience and subject to local market conditions, plus 10% of net salary retirement contribution supplement

The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams and initiatives working across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We work to improve the productivity of people and firms as the key driver of sustainable economic development.

IGC’s engagement in Zambia produces data, actionable research, strategy, and economic policy advice focusing on natural resource governance, public-sector effectiveness, agriculture and firm productivity, with a cross-cutting focus on climate adaptation and poverty reduction. IGC Zambia is the knowledge partner of the Presidential Delivery Unit and has deep ties with the Ministry of Finance and National Planning and other key government departments, enabling us to develop long-term research-based learning partnerships with a government that deliver both policy and academic impact. IGC also plays an important role in supporting the economic development dialogue in Zambia, such as through co-hosting the Economic Growth Forum.

Reporting to the Country Manager, the Country Economists work to implement the country strategy, undertaking economic analysis, identifying and developing opportunities for policy influence, connecting researchers with policymakers and working on policy briefs and synthesis/research papers, etc. They support researchers in facilitating research projects; track and report on the portfolio of research projects, manage country programme activities, including country visits and events as well as regular reports on research and policy developments; contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the programme; support the dissemination of research outputs to maximise policy impact; and can potentially work on IGC research projects where opportunities arise, and interests match. For this hire, we are particularly interested in a candidate who can help grow our work on energy and environment.

Applicants should have strong economics skills, including knowledge of both macro and micro economics, excellent quantitative skills in economic analysis, sophisticated understanding of policy issues in developing countries, excellent communications and organisational skills, and hold a post-graduate degree (MSc/MPA/MPP/MA or PhD) in economics, development economics, public policy/administration finance, trade and industrial organization, or a related discipline.  Knowledge and experience of Zambian policy issues would be an advantage.
