This is an exciting time to join the newly established Data Science Institute. Created in late 2020, the Data Science Institute (DSI) is a new academic entity of cross-disciplinary Institute status. The DSI’s mission is to bring LSE’s considerable expertise and knowledge to bear on the global data science debate, by both harnessing data science to know the causes of things and critically questioning data science developments and potential societal impacts, in an exciting new synthesis of data science and the broader social sciences.
A key role the DSI will play in facilitating data science at LSE is to support research computing, through a mixture of software, services, training, and infrastructure. The new Data Science Computing Lab (DASCL) will deliver these services to end users through a private cloud network as well as on-premise high-performance computing.
The DASCL Support Officer will provide support for the DASCL computing resources as well as for LSE’s broader “Fabian” cloud computing environment. Support will consist of writing and maintaining documentation, designing and delivering training, and providing ongoing user support for technical and usage-related queries. This role will involve working with the Data and Technology Services division (DTS) and the Digital Skills Lab to provide training, support, and user guides to users of the DASCL cloud services, as well as for the “Fabian” cloud computing service that is managed by DTS.
Candidates will have:
· Experience of cloud computing services (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP), strong background of working with a variety of operating systems (especially UNIX/LINUX), database systems (e.g. SQL), and research computing/scripting languages (e.g. Python, R).
· Experience with cloud computing, especially regarding data science research computing platforms.
· Experience with OpenStack or similar platform will be an advantage.
· Experience with resource and job schedulers in UNIX environment will be an advantage.
· Evidence of a strong technical background relating to industry standard technology.
· Experience with revision control systems, i.e. GitHub, and issue tracking systems (e.g. JIRA).
· Experience with web publishing and the creation and maintenance of documentation (e.g. SharePoint, Confluence).
· Experience delivering in-person training and support for computing services.
· Excellent communication skills with a good command of the English language both orally and in writing.
· An ability to work with existing teams, and within an expanded future DASCL team as the Institute grows.
We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.
