Policy Officer, Transition Pathway Initiative

 

Salary from £37,197 - £44,802 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £48,168 pa inclusive of London allowance

 

This is a fixed term appointment to December 2022 (extension subject to further funding), starting no later than the week of 4th January 2022.

 

 The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment hosts the Institute’s Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI). TPI is an asset owner-led initiative launched in 2017 and supported by 111 asset managers and owners with over $39 trillion of assets under management and advice. The initiative assesses how companies are preparing for the transition to a low-carbon economy. We are the academic partner to the TPI and we collaborate with investors, the data provider FTSE Russell. We assess over 400 publicly listed companies across 16 sectors on carbon management practices Management Quality and over 300 on Carbon Performance, which involves quantitative benchmarking of companies’ emissions pathways against different climate scenarios (1.5 Degrees, Below 2 Degrees, National Pledges) consistent with the 2015 UN Paris Agreement. We are also working on a number of research projects, including developing frameworks to assess financial institutions and new asset classes (corporate and sovereign bonds issuers). This role is to provide high-quality analysis in support of the TPI by carrying out research to update existing and develop new methodologies with a focus on developing Carbon Performance methodology for food sector, conduct the company assessments, maintain and enhance the TPI database and tool, contribute to TPI research outputs, and helping to ensure that the Institute remains abreast of and responsive to the latest developments in sustainable finance policy and practice. The post holder will have an opportunity to engage with external stakeholders, including investors and companies. The post holder will be also expected to play an active role in the Institute, including by preparing and contributing to a range of research-based and policy-relevant outputs.

 

Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in environmental economics/finance, environmental/energy policy, corporate sustainability, economics, finance, management, or a related field. They should have strong analytical and quantitative skills and be able to demonstrate experience of producing high-quality research and research analysis, aimed at decision-makers. Due to the data focused nature of the role excellent and proficient IT skills, including advanced MS Excel skills as well as data management skills.
