 Library Assistant (Reader Services)

 

This post is 17.5 hours per week until the end of July 2026

 

Salary from £32,890 to £36,052 pa (pro rata) inclusive with potential to progress to £38,422 pa inclusive of London allowance



The Library is at the heart of LSE, one of the world’s greatest social science universities, and serves a vibrant community of students and staff in the centre of London. It has a high reputation both nationally and internationally for its extensive collections, its involvement in innovative projects and its high quality services.

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic individual to join a team in Access Services in the Library providing help and support to staff, students and visitors. Access Services provides many of the front of house and first point of contact services for the Library and consists of two teams, Enquiry Services and Reader Services.

 

This role is in Reader Services; You will assist in delivering a range of high quality services to support users of LSE Library, including membership, circulation and the management and delivery of The Women’s Library Reading Room service used for consultation of archival and special collection material.

 

The role also contributes to an inclusive approach to service provision and delivery to members of the LSE community and visitors with disabilities or who need additional support.

 

The successful candidate will be trained as a Safepod Coordinator performing security checks and check in/out of researchers. All applicants understand that they may have to undergo stringent background and identity checks. Refusal to consent to this may lead to a refusal of the role.

 

 The role will involve some cross team working and there will be opportunities to contribute to the wider work of the Library through involvement with project and working groups.

 

You will be educated to ‘GCSE’ level or equivalent. You should be an excellent communicator with a proven ability to relate to a wide range of users and academic colleagues. You will be well organised and self-motivated with experience of team working and an ability to take initiative and solve problems. Experience of working in Customer Service environments would be an advantage. This is a front-facing role with a requirement to be on site to deliver services. The exact working pattern is subject to some negotiation but would predominately fall between core working hours of 9.30 – 4.30, Monday to Friday.
