Data Analyst for Education

Salary from £40,229 to £48,456 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £52,095 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a fixed term appointment for 1 year (with the potential to extend, subject to funding)

The London School of Economics is a cosmopolitan university situated in the vibrant centre of London that specialises in the study of social sciences. LSE’s Data and Technology Services division provides services to over 10,000 staff and student users.

As a Data Analyst for Education, you will take a lead on designing, developing and deploying data solutions that can inform improvements in student education and experience. Working as part of the Data and Development Team, you will focus on student related data and will work directly with the Educate for Global Impact Learning Organisation programme. You will be involved across all aspects of service delivery including project work and continuous service improvement.

You will need broad knowledge and experience in working with data, with a focus on identifying, collecting, and preparing data from multiple sources for onwards analysis, visualisation, and presentation. You will have experience of specialist tools such as Alteryx Designer and Tableau Desktop. The data landscape at LSE covers COTS (customised off the shelf), SaaS (software as a service), bespoke business applications, and information from a variety of internal and external sources. You will work across this landscape, including collaborating with and supporting colleagues across LSE in their own analysis and use of data. You will also have the chance to help shape the implementation of LSE’s pilot data platform using Microsoft Azure.

Candidates should have:

  • Practical experience of working with data visualisation tools to include:
    • Development of data sources and related metadata
    • Use of formulae and calculated fields to enhance data
    • Worksheets and dashboards for interactive analysis
  • Practical experience of working with graphical ETL and data preparation tools to include:

o   Extraction and blending of data from multiple sources

o   Use of formulae and calculated fields to enhance data

o   Transformations, filters, aggregation, sampling

o   Tests and error handling

o   Preparation of data for use in other tools such as Tableau

  •  Understand source code control and versioning, and be able to effectively use tools such as Git.
  • Experience of working within a project management methodology e.g. Agile with Scrum.
  • Knowledge and awareness of cyber security and data protection policies
