Research Officer in Demography
Salary from £36,647 to £44,140 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £47,456 pa inclusive of London allowance
This is a fixed term appointment until late May 2023
The postholder will work on a project on ageing and health in the UK funded by UKRI which is part of a wider UK/China collaborative programme. The project is focussed on the family and household situation of older people, understanding how intergenerational relationships operate in the face of demographic change and the implications for housing and social care of the changing circumstances of older people.
Working under the direction of Professor Mike Murphy, the postholder will make an important contribution to the research programme, developing and applying forecasting models centred on living arrangements, kin availability and physical and mental health of older people, predominantly using large scale longitudinal UK data sets. Some analyses of cross sectional and cross-national sources will also be involved. The postholder will also help scope relevant literature, both substantive and technical, prepare data, and conduct quantitative analysis including extending existing projection methods. They will co-author or lead publications and presentations at national and international conferences. The role will involve some national and international travel (when permitted) to attend project and programme meetings, access research resources and participate in conferences and other dissemination activities.
Candidates should have PhD, or other research experience, and strong technical quantitative skills with some background in demography or a related quantitative discipline. They should have demonstrated expertise in undertaking high-level statistical and mathematical modelling in R or a closely-related system, the ability to conduct literature reviews and summarise research findings. Candidates should also have expertise in applying quantitative methods to a high standard in research and the ability to conduct high-quality research and publish in journals of international standing.
