The Centre for Economic Performance at LSE is recruiting a Post Doc Research Economist to join the Education and Skills Programme. Projects in the programme address how to make the education system more productive and efficient as well as ensuring it facilitates inclusiveness and social mobility. Examples of projects the research economist may work on include examining how austerity has affected schools and students and the implications of the quality of post-16 provision for educational progression and labour market outcomes. These projects will be alongside the programme director, Sandra McNally as well as other members of CEP.

The Research Economist will play a major role in the design and execution of projects and co-author work. The successful candidate will assist with data preparation, merging, modelling, and analysis and will contribute to co-authored journal quality papers as well as coordinating the work of others as required.

The successful candidate should have an undergraduate degree or equivalent, and a PhD (or be under one year to completion from post start date) in either Economics or another quantitative social science discipline. They must have a strong interest and knowledge of education and skills policy issues and a good training in Economics. They should have advanced analytical skills in handling and quantitative analysis of large individual-level datasets; experience in the use of STATA, and experience of execution and write-up of independent research projects. They should have the ability to identify appropriate methods of investigation and key research questions, the ability to interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data and to think through problems analytically, and to author/co-author papers of refereed journal article quality. The ability to work for a lot of the time independently of close supervision, and strong organisational skills, in order to work with data providers, project stakeholders and other team members, are required. We also require excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical material in non-technical terms for policy and other non-academic stakeholders. The abilities to supervise junior researchers, and to coordinate and integrate work contributions of other team members are also essential.
