PhD Academy Assistant Manager (Casework and Advice)

 

Salary from £43,277 to £51,714 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £55,497 pa inclusive of London allowance

 

This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months, available for immediate start

 

The PhD Academy delivers end-to-end support for postgraduate research students from enrolment to award, integrating registry, advisory and developmental services within a single operating model. It provides a home, forum and platform for the School’s doctoral community, advocates for PGR students, and safeguards academic standards and regulatory compliance. It works with academic departments and central divisions to ensure consistent, high-quality support aligned with the School’s strategic priorities.

The Assistant Manager (Casework and Advice) provides senior operational oversight of student and department-facing casework within the Research Degrees Management team. This 12-month fixed-term role focuses on service continuity, consistency and risk management. It leads day-to-day casework handling, triage and workflow, provides expert guidance and quality assurance, and acts as the main contact for complex or escalated matters. The postholder manages a defined portfolio of sensitive or high-risk cases, ensures accuracy and compliance in student records, contributes to service planning and review, and participates in the on-campus management rota.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, resilience and discretion in handling complex casework. They will work independently within established frameworks, take responsibility for decisions, and escalate appropriately where required. They will show strong analytical ability and close attention to detail, and communicate clearly and confidently with a wide range of stakeholders. They will plan and prioritise effectively under pressure, use initiative within defined boundaries, and work collaboratively to maintain consistent, high-quality service delivery.

 

Please note that the successful candidate will be expected to work in the office full-time for their first two weeks in post, during the enrolment period (late September), and for five days in every ten working day period as part of the PhD Academy rota. Additional on campus days are expected for monthly ‘everyone in’ days, and may also be required subject to business need.
