Salary from £30,570 to £35,108 with potential to progress to £37,717 pa inclusive of London allowance 

 This is a full-time fixed term appointment for 18 months  

 

The CEP Growth Programme is recruiting Research Assistant to join a team led by Mirko Draca and Anna Valero that will build up new quantitative evidence on emerging technologies (eg: AI, blockchain, clean-tech, quantum) and the drivers of their invention and adoption in the UK. The aim of the work is to improve understanding of the UK’s productivity puzzle, and, practically the project will integrate a rich range of 'web intelligence' data on technology and venture capital with large firm-level databases. Via engagement with government and industry, the project also aims to vitally inform the development of the UK’s industrial strategy. 

You will assist senior staff by preparing, matching and carrying out initial analysis of data on firm innovation and diffusion, preparing draft reports, summaries of findings and literature surveys. Opportunity where appropriate will be provided for co-authorship of scientific papers.

 

Candidates should have a first or upper second class (or international equivalent) undergraduate degree in Economics or other quantitative discipline; and a Masters in Economics or other quantitative social science discipline (but must have very good knowledge of economics) by post start date. Standard of Masters should qualify entry to PhD programme.

 

Candidates should also have advanced experience of using Stata for analysing large scale micro datasets and experience of large-scale data driven projects.  They should have the ability to work independently, without close supervision. An interest / prior experience in the application of data science techniques in economics is desirable. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical material in non-technical terms for policy and other non- academic stakeholders. A demonstrated knowledge of and interest in economics of innovation and technological change, and the wider context of industrial strategy and current policy issues related to productivity is also desirable.
