Salary from £37,197 to £44,802 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £48,168 pa inclusive of London allowance

 

This is a fixed term appointment for 3 years

 

The Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA) focuses on engagement with Africa through cutting-edge research, teaching and public events, strengthening LSE’s long-term commitment to placing Africa at the heart of understandings and debates on global issues. The FLIA is seeking an exceptional communications manager and editorial professional to develop and deliver high-level communications and event strategies that push forward initiatives and tell our story.

Whether we are encouraging debate or sharing insights from our latest research findings, communications play an integral role in our commitment to bringing about real-world impact by informing those who are motivated to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by Africa.

 

This role is central to driving the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA)’s strategic vision and working at a high level across the School to strengthen LSE’s research and engagement impact. The postholder will demonstrate a senior level understanding of communications and public affairs in African research promotion and policy, driving impact initiatives and integrating Institute programmes with School divisions, departments, centres, research units, and external partners. Managing an events and communications team, the postholder will produce sophisticated communications and events strategies to deliver multi-channel projects across digital, editorial, media relations, and events to grow the LSE community’s work on Africa to meet LSE’s 2030 Strategy commitments, taking responsibility for a large international network and external partnerships at senior institutional levels. The postholder will shape the Institute’s strategic direction making decisions to advance fundraising opportunities, grow the globally renowned Africa at LSE blog, tailor events to institute strategic requirements, and steer communication objectives. During periods of transition, they will evaluate growth and create positive change across Institute structures for events, engagement, and impact.

 

Candidates should have a senior level understanding of communications and public affairs in African research promotion, policy and publishing. Possess exceptional writing and editing skills for varied audiences and experience working with senior professionals to improve outputs. Successful candidates will have experience in using communications to design and inform strategic objectives and advocating brand development at senior institutional levels. Candidates are expected to have experience in line-management and hold a post-graduate qualification (or equivalent experience) in Journalism, International Development, International Relations, African Studies, Anthropology, Sociology and/or Geography.
