The Centre for Economic Performance at LSE is recruiting a Post Doc Research Economist to join a team led by Ralf Martin and Anna Valero. The post holder will contribute to the ESRC funded multi-centre project “Productive and Inclusive Net Zero” (PRINZ) that will build up new quantitative evidence on the opportunities and barriers in the transition to sustainable and equitable growth.
The Research Economist will play a major role in the design and execution of the project and co-author work. The successful candidate will assist with data preparation, merging, modelling, and analysis and will contribute to co-authored journal quality papers as well as coordinating the work of others as required. The appointee will be based at the Centre for Economic Performance and will be expected to play an active intellectual role in the life of the Centre, including collaborating with other research programmes, and staff at other top UK universities. We are looking for individuals who are excited about communicating their research to decisions makers.
The successful candidate should have a PhD (or be under one year to completion from post start date) in either Economics or another quantitative social science discipline. They should also have a research interest in the growth and labour market impacts of the transition to a low carbon economy. They should have advanced analytical skills in handling and quantitative analysis of large firm-level datasets; and experience in the use of R, STATA and other econometrics software, and experience of execution and write-up of independent research projects. Experience with Natural Language Processing and large-scale datasets (>1 TB) and associated software tooling (e.g. Google BigQuery, AWS Athena) is desirable.
They should have the ability to identify appropriate methods of investigation and key research questions, interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data and think through problems analytically, and to author/co-author papers of refereed journal article quality. Strong organisational skills, and the ability to work independently of close supervision, in order to work with data providers, project stakeholders and supervise junior team members, are required. We also require excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical material in non-technical terms for policy and other non-academic stakeholders.
