We are looking for two postdoctoral researchers in any discipline of the arts, humanities, or qualitative social sciences, who has a keen interest in multidisciplinary approaches to Chinese global orders of any time period from the 15th century to the present. The candidate should have a high level of proficiency in reading and/or speaking Chinese, or another language(s) relevant to their research and be enthusiastic about working with scholars and non-academic stakeholders across the world to formulate critical perspectives on Chinese global orders past and present.

The successful candidates will take part in the research, convening, and knowledge translation activities of the “Chinese Global Orders” Global Convening Programme, funded by the British Academy and led by Professor Leigh Jenco (LSE) and Associate Professor Hasan Karrar (LUMS). The programme brings together a team of international scholars across the critical social sciences and humanities—including art history, literature, political philosophy, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, and history—to produce interdisciplinary knowledge of significant impact for academia, policy, and wider society.  The team explores the undertheorized status of China as a global norm maker, asking what Chinese global orders look like, where and when they are constituted, and from whose perspective. By viewing China not as a homogenous ‘other,’ but as a site of cultural, economic, philosophical and aesthetic entanglements across Asia, Africa, and Europe, our investigations of ‘global’ orders are also ‘local’ and work in multiple places and timeframes.

The successful candidate should have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in an arts, humanities or social sciences discipline by the post start date, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

We offer the successful candidates the opportunity to produce cutting-edge research and to conduct knowledge translation activities as a part of a global interdisciplinary team, in a vibrant research environment at a world-leading university. The candidates will be based at the Department of Government at the London School of Economics, but may pursue research in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates working in the fields of comparative political theory and intellectual history in the early modern and modern periods.

We also offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.
