LSE Fellow in the Anthropology of China

Salary from £42,679 to £51,000 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £54,730 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a career development position and is fixed term for two years

An LSE Fellowship is intended to be an entry route to an academic career and is deemed by the School to be a career development position.  As such, applicants who have already been employed as a LSE Fellow for three years in total are not eligible to apply. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for an LSE Fellow to teach primarily on the MSc programme “China in Comparative Perspective”. The Department has a strong international reputation and a long and distinguished history of leadership in the discipline. This will provide the Fellow with an ideal environment for starting their academic career.

In this role you will contribute to the teaching of students on the MSc China in Comparative Perspective alongside and under the direction of the Programme Director for the MSc. The main objective of this programme is to explore the modern history, politics, economy, and social life of China in an explicitly comparative framework, drawing on concepts and theories drawn from across the social sciences. You will also be required to make a contribution to the teaching of the Department in the core subject areas of social anthropology. In addition to lecturing and class/seminar teaching, you will act as an academic advisor (mentor). This is a career development post, with limited administrative duties, and it is intended that you will dedicate a significant amount of time to your own research and writing.

Candidates should have:

·       Completed or be close to completing a PhD in Anthropology by the post start date

·       Expertise in China and a strong interest in comparative social science

·       A developing research record in Anthropology

·       Excellent communication and presentation skills

·       The ability to work in close partnership with fellow teachers, including on a one-on-one basis and in small groups, and to provide effective support, as necessary

·       The ability to foster an engaging and supportive learning environment

·       A commitment to equality and diversity

The appointment will be from 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
